Ok, so Reviped asked me to write a bi-monthly column, and I must say it’s been a while since I wrote down stuff about me, my life and my music, besides on Twitter that is.. So if this is boring as hell, blame it on the boogie. I used to write a monthly column in Dutch a few years back for a Dutch magazine, but I’d like to think that I can express myself better in English than I do in Dutch. So this Reviped-thingy was quite the opportunity! Maybe you’ve heard of me before, maybe you don’t, but I’ll use this first column to introduce myself and tell you all who I am and what I’m all about…
I’ve been in the music scene for quite some time now and I must say, it never gets bored.. A few years back I started producing as Jordy Lishious and my first release “Raw” did quite some damage. Now, almost 5 years later things are a bit different from back then. I do everything myself now, because I used to make my first productions with a companion. And in some way it feels much better now, as I have total freedom to make exactly what I want. But it wasn’t easy. I had to learn everything myself, with only basic Logic-skills as a start. It got quite frustrating at times, not being able to make stuff as I heard it in my head. But I can’t be any happier with the music I make nowadays! Of course I want to make music that others will like, but the most important thing to me is that I like it..
It really feels that my music is a reflection of what I think and who I am, and that feels awesome.
About 2,5 years ago I made a track that I named “Radiator”. I thought it was a cool little track, with a refreshing melody. But when I send it over to a few labels, the only response I was getting was: “Cool track, but not for us..”. So I decided to store it on the shelve and just not to think about it that much. Then last year Funkagenda send me a Tweet asking if I had any tracks that hadn’t been signed yet, because he was looking for new material for his own new “Funk Farm” label. So I send him 4 tracks, and Radiator was one of them. He loved it, and with a few tweaks it was ready for a release. So after more than 2 years, it finally saw daylight last December! I really believe that Radiator is more relevant at this time, than it was 2 years ago. And when I found out that even Deadmau5 supported it, AND put it in his Beatport Top 10 this January, I couldn’t be any happier :-)
“Lump” is a total different story. Lump is my latest track, which has been signed and released by Hardwell, a good friend of mine. The rough version was made in one night, as I couldn’t sleep while laying in bed. I decided to fire up the studio, put on my headphones and a few hours later the track was almost done. The day after, I put everything in place and fine-tuned the mix. Finished! Where Lump took me one day, Radiator almost took me 2, maybe 3 weeks until I was totally satisfied. After listening to the thing a couple of times, I dropped Tiesto a mail to see if he liked it. It was kinda bigroom, so if someone could play it, it must’ve been him. Just a few days later I found a video on YouTube of the big T playing it in front of a mental crowd. That was last September. And now, a good 4 months later it’s out! Although it is a track that doesn’t really sounds like anything I made before, it still feels mine (if you know what I mean, haha)..
One of the most important things that I really keep in the back of my head all the time, is to keep pushing myself to be creative, and not to copy my own tracks that much. My tracks truly sound alike, I’m aware of that, but I really don’t want to make an exact copy of something I already did before.
To close this first column, I really want to tell you all that I’ve got a new (sort-of) residency! Every first Friday of the month, you can hear an exclusive one-hour mix on Dutch Dance Radiostation SlamFM! at midnight, right after Ferry Corsten’s show! I’m absolutely thrilled to bring my own “Dope & Dirty” show to national radio.
I guess I will write about my trips to Russia, Curacao and Miami in my next column, which are all going to happen in the next few weeks. I’m totally excited to visit Miami for the first time, can’t wait!
