Interview – Madeon ‘Massive sound, Minimum Age’

By Bianca Cadloni — October 17, 2011

After Pete Tong set young French producer Madeon’s remix of Deadmau5′s ‘Raise Your Weapon,’ to the mainstream electronic dance music masses, his life began to drastically change. The young prodigy is one of the most sought after producers of the moment, and he can barely play the clubs he is booking! Reviped decided that Madeon was the perfect person to interview, based on his impending EP set to release this summer. Madeon has been wowing the masses with his funky flair, and ear for music. Madeon is set to tour Europe this fall, and you don’t want to miss him.

Your remix of Deadmau5‘s track,‘Raise Your Weapon,’ has been one of the few remixes from his album 4×4=12 that the mau5 has taken notice of. How did that make you feel?
I was really pleased with the positive reaction the remix received, i was particularly anxious as the remix took a lot of effort.

Have you noticed an influx of fan support since the track has gained recognition?
Yes, i think it’s been worthwhile exercise, it’s really cool to have a larger group of people to show music to.

Pete Tong played the Deadmau5 remix on his radio show. What was that like for you? Were you aware that he was going to play your remix on the air?
I received some messages saying Pete had played the remix. I was totally unaware that he was going to be playing so it was a lovely way to start the weekend.

Gaining recognition for your remixes is not new for you. Your remix of Yelle’s ‘Que veux-tu’ allowed you to play with Yelle in France. What was that like?
It was a lot of fun, the band were fantastic.

You are working on a four track EP for release at some point this summer. What can we expect from this EP? Will it be all original productions?
Yes the EP will be made from original tracks that haven’t been released yet. I want to capture the sound i’ve been exploring with my recent remixes within the open context of original songs, but also try out musical styles i’m not used to.

You have mentioned that you were working on a remix that had not yet been released, when ‘Raise Your Weapon’ gained recognition. Can you give us a clue as to what artist/song that may be, and when it will be released?
This remix was finished before Raise Your Weapon, but i’m not sure when it will be released yet. The artist is a newcomer, it’s a fun pop remix !

You have a really unique and organic sound. What do you feel that you do in productions that sets you apart from other producers?
I’m happy you think so. I think every producer has a natural style that dervies from his influences, in my case, i try to do pop with the tools of club music.

You have mentioned that Pendulum and Daft Punk are the only shows you have been to. Were these two shows what inspired you to produce electronic dance music?
No, I was already into music production when i saw those shows, but they were a revalation from a performance standpoint.

What other electronic artists do you gain inspiration from?
I think i’m more influenced by pop and rock musicians, it’s why i cherish the shorter song format over extended dub mixes.
